Teaching popping words

This is my way to introduce sight words

Select 5 to 10 new words each week to teach.
Make your own cards or print my cards onto hard cardboard.
Show the word to the child.
Say: This is the word /XXXX/
Ask: What letter is at the beginning of this word?

Point out something characteristic about the word for example:
This word begins with the same letter as your name; or This word only has 3 letters, spell the word aloud
Ask your children to spell it aloud.
Have the child practice the popping words with a hands-on activity like bingo, concentration, battleship games, etc. The game should be played with a partner, a friend, family or you

*It is important that the words be seen in context or print like they will be seen when reading.

ABC order

Let children place the cards in abc order.
Word formation

Use plastic letters to "write" the words.

New sentences
You can use the cards with your children to create their own sentences.

Pass the box!
Use an empty box of popcorn. Let children pass the box while counting or saying a chant. Ask a child to pick up a card and read it. If it is ok, he keeps the card.

Tic tac toe
Allow them to play tic tac toe, either with colored chalk on the board or with colored pencils on paper. you can also make tic tac toe games with manipulative pieces. Before a children can place an "x" or an "o" on the grid, he or she must spell a sight word correctly.

Pick up a card
Put all of the word cards face down on the table and then just kind of shove them around on the table top with my hands as I say "Pick a card, pick a card, pick a card_________." and name a child. They have to reach in a grab one of the rotating cards. If they can say the word they keep the card if they can't we all read it and it goes back into the pot.
