January word work II

More ideas for word work

Word hunt
G
oing on a hunt is always fun. Even with words. In this activity I invited my kids to "hunt" different words such as fruits, veggies, cereals, meat, dairy products, etc.
You can use the word wall cards or you can hide flashcards around the room.

What's your favourite word?
These are some of the activities we did with my kids. They chose their favourite word and do different things such a
* write and draw
* cut and paste
* colour the vowels
*colour the consonants
Sentences
As the year goes on and more words are on the word wall, you can dictate entire sentences that are made up of word wall words. Repeat each sentence slowly and remind the students about grammar and mechanics. Check and chant each word in the sentence in the usual manner. You also can dictate only questions, or exclamatory sentences to work on punctuation during your word wall time.

Story words
This is one of my kids' favourite activity with flashcards. I placed some flashcards in different baskets. Then I asked them to choose some of the cards to write sentences or a story.
Either the sentences or the story can be nonsense. And this is the funniest part.

Word clues
Place some flashcards in a basket or box. Invite children find a word for each letter of the alphabet. Let them write or draw the word in the worksheet.
Then you can ask them to write some clues for their friends to guess the word.

Some possible clues:
*it begins with...
*it has 4 letters
*it has 2 vowels
* it ends with...
* it has 2 syllables
*it rhymes with..
*it is a fruit
* it is red
* it can...
