A is for apples- Day 1

A is for apples- Day 1

What’s in the jar?
You will need:
·        A plastic jar.
·        Some props that begin with “A” such as plastic ants, apples, etc.
·        Letters “A” ( in upper and lower case) made of plastic, foam or wood.
·        Pom poms, musical instruments, shakers, bells, maracas.

Gather your children in the meeting area. Explain them that they are going to learn about a new letter of the alphabet.
Show the letter jar.
Tell that the new letter is hidden in the jar. Let children peep inside the jar “What can you see in the jar?” “What’s this?”
Open the jar and show the objects one by one.
Pick up an object and say its sound.  For example pick up an apple and say “Apple”. Exaggerate the “A” sound.
Then, point to each object and say the sound of the letter “A” and the name of the object. After each object's name is stated, repeat the name and sound of the letter “A”.
Then show the letter “A” (you can make it with foam or wood or cardboard) Point to it and say it's name.
Specify between capital and lowercase. Be sure to always show both capital and lowercase. Always say the sound of the letter “A” afterwards. For example, an instructional sentence could go like this: "This is capital “A”. This is lower case "a".

Invite children to celebrate letter “A”. Collect some musical
instruments, pompons, bells, maracas and let them cheer the letter “A”.
The chant may go like this:
A-   A- A-
A is for apples
Apples, Apples, Apples
3 cheers for A!
3 cheers for Apples!

Ask children to clap, to shout, to whisper, to dance the letter “A”.

“A” poster
You will need:
·        A big sheet of paper or a board
·        Markers or chalk
Use the board or a big sheet of paper.
Ask children to pick up an object and say its name. Write what they say in the board or paper.
Let children brainstorm more words that begin with A.
Write the words in the paper.
If you are working with younger children make a simple drawing next to each word for visual support.
 TIP
Remember to focus on letter “A” this time. Be sure your children have fully mastered one letter before moving on to the next.
Letter mats
You will need:
·        Letter mats
·        Art supplies
·        Worksheets

After children find, say, chant and write letter “A”, invite them to use the letter mats. There are many things children can do with the mats.
Children can:
·        Draw things that begin with “A” using their favourite art supplies.
·        Paste cut-outs or stickers.
·        Stamp things that begin with “A”.
·        Glue some aluminum, apple seeds, acorns, etc.
·        Print apples with tempera.
·        Use playdough to form the letter “A”.
·        Finger paint letter A with red tempera for apples.
·        Finger paint letter A with black tempera for ants.
·        Paint letter A with green tempera for alligator.
·        Paste stickers of animals.

TIP
You will find different letter mats. Choose what you think will be more convenient for your group.
After playing with the mats, let them complete the worksheets.

To complement The letter of the week program, I opened a facebook group where you will find ideas and printables for each letter. Join! It is free!
